Robert Meyer, born October 2, 1945 in Oslo, is a Norwegian art photographer, professor, photo historian, collector, writer and publicist. Meyer started his professional career in 1963. Working as a professional photographer in the Norwegian National Criminal Investigation Service ("Kripos") in Oslo, and as a photojournalist in the newspaper Vårt Land, while freelancing for the weekly press. The following year he moved to Stockholm, where he studied photography supervised by the artist Christer Strömholm at Fotoskolan, the University of Stockholm. Subsequently, he worked five years as a freelancer in Stockholm, Oslo and Buenos Aires. Meyer returned to Oslo in 1967, and from 1971 to 1978 he worked as a photojournalist and editorial member for the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation's NRK magazine. Meyer was the initiator of "Forbundet Frie Fotografer" (The Association of Fine Art Photographers) and was involved in establishing Norsk Fotohistorisk Forening (The Norwegian Photo Historical Society). In 1979 he became the first chairman of the board of Fotogalleriet (The Photographers Gallery), Oslo. Meyer founded the publishing house Ikaros, which produced the Norwegian Photo Historical Journal, a series of books on photography and historically important facsimile editions and served as a member of Taylor & Francis consultative council for the history of photography. Later, he worked as an art critic for Norway's leading newspaper, Aftenposten.  In 1979 Meyer put aside his professional career as a photographer to devote his time researching national and international history of photography.

 

Meyer became the first professor of photography in Norway in 1990 at the National College of Art in Bergen, where he founded the Institute of Photography. In 1998 he returned to Oslo and founded a private school for photography, now associated with NISS. Robert Meyer’s photographs are represented in numerous collections in Norway and abroad. Meyer has received wide recognition for his construction of The Robert Meyer Collection (RMC), the largest private Norwegian photo historic art collection, which he later placed in The National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in Oslo. It includes about 10,000 images, with emphasis on the Norwegian and Nordic photography and a specialized library.

I 1979 ble han den første styrelederen for Fotogalleriet. Meyer grunnla forlaget Ikaros, som produserte Norsk Fotohistorisk Journal, en serie bøker om fotografi og historisk viktige faksimileutgaver, var medlem av Taylor & Francis råd for fotohistorie og kunstkritiker for Norges ledende avis, Aftenposten. I 1979 la Meyer sin profesjonelle karriere som fotograf på hyllen for å vie sin tid til å forske på nasjonal og internasjonal fotohistorie. 

 

I 1990 ble Meyer ble den første professor i fotografi i Norge ved Kunstakademiet i Bergen, hvor han grunnla Fotografisk institutt. I 1998 flyttet han tilbake til Oslo og grunnla en privatskole for fotografi som nå er tilknyttet NISS. Robert Meyers fotografier er representert i en rekke samlinger i inn og utland. Mest kjent hjemme og ute er Robert Meyer for oppbyggingen av The Robert Meyer Collection (RMC), Norges største private fotohistoriske kunstsamling, som håndteres av Nasjonalmuseet for kunst. Den omfatter mer enn 10 000 bilder med hovedvekt på norsk og nordisk fotografi.
