Siri Ekker Svendsen is a visual artist who lives and works in Oslo. Her works are primarily concerned with the relationship between nature, perception and consciousness, and the connection between the physical world and the human perception and imagination.

 

Siri Ekker Svendsen holds an MFA from Bergen Academy of Art and Design. Her previous exhibitions include Malmö Konstall, Sweden, Grünerløkka Kunsthall, Oslo, Galleri F15, Preus Fotomuseum, Høstutstillingen, ArtGenda, Hamburg and Center for Contemporary Arts Afganhistan, Kabul.

 

Siri Ekker Svendsen presents two projects:

 

Presence of Things Unseen consist of six analog photographs. The series is based on the urge of humans to create a mythology; to make a system of the chaos that exists between nature and culture. Through studying and interacting with different trees, landscapes and spaces, Siri Ekker Svendsen wants to investigate the potential for human imagination, ideas of animism and the philosophical direction of deep ecology, which argues for the inherent value of living beings, irrespective of their instrumental usefulness for human beings.

 

In All the whisperings of the world, Svendsen is investigating the connection between nature's vulnerability and the bodily impact of an allergic shock, starting from the Brazil nut tree. Both the Brazil nut tree and certain types of allergies are explicit examples of nature's vulnerability, complexity and diversity. All the whisperings of the world address spatial examination of cells and rain forests, and the body as a link between inner and outer reality. It contrasts the measurable, scientific experience with that of belonging to a larger context – an ecosystem.

Siri Ekker Svendsen er en billedkunstner som bor og arbeider i Oslo. I sine arbeider er hun opptatt av forholdet mellom natur, persepsjon og bevissthet, og sammenhengen mellom den fysiske verden og menneskets persepsjon og forestillingsevne. Mange av arbeidene hennes tar utgangspunkt i biologi, psykologi og mytologisk materiale.

 

Siri Ekker Svendsen har en master fra Kunsthøgskolen i Bergen, og har tidligere stilt ut ved blant annet Malmö Konstall, Sverige, Grünerløkka Kunsthall, Galleri F15, Preus Fotomuseum, Høstutstillingen, ArtGenda, Hamburg, og Center for Contemporary Arts Afganhistan, Kabul.

Presence of Things Unseen består av seks analoge fotografier. Serien er basert på menneskets trang til å skape en mytologi, å lage et system ut av kaoset som eksisterer mellom natur og kultur. Gjennom motiver av ulike trær, landskap og rom, vil Siri Ekker Svendsen undersøke potensialet for menneskelig fantasi, ideer om animisme og den filosofiske retningen dypøkologi, som argumenterer for den iboende verdien av levende vesener, uavhengig av deres instrumentelle nytte for mennesket.

 

I All the whisperings of the world undersøker Siri Ekker Svendsen sammenhengen mellom naturens sårbarhet og den kroppslig virkning av et allergisk sjokk, med utgangspunkt i paranøtt-treet. Både paranøtt-treet og visse typer allergier er eksplisitte eksempler på naturens sårbarhet, kompleksitet og mangfoldighet. All the whisperings of the world tar for seg romlige undersøkelser av celler og regnskog, og kroppen som et bindeledd mellom indre og ytre virkelighet. Det målbare og vitenskapelige stilles side ved side med følelsen av å tilhøre en større sammenheng – et økosystem.
